Job Description

The Texas Observer is seeking a digital editor to oversee our growing online presence. We are a 68-year-old National Magazine Award-winning Texas institution that was doing longform before longform was cool. We are also increasingly a daily digital must-read covering Texas politics and culture with an emphasis on social justice, inequality, race, LGBTQ+ issues, and immigration.

As the digital editor, you are in charge of web-only stories, from short daily items to in-depth investigations and features, and maintaining the web schedule.

This position requires someone capable of stewarding all aspects of editorial production from story conception to line editing to writing headlines. You will work with the editor and managing editor as well as the reporting staff and freelancers to ensure the website is a healthy mix of smart commentary, fearless reporting, and timely news.

You will collaborate with the audience development manager and digital associate to coordinate social media promotion and SEO. You will also assist with magazine production, including proofing and light editing duties.

You must be a mission-oriented professional with an ability to work independently and think on your feet.

The digital editor must be based in Texas or willing to relocate.

Qualifications include

  • Excellent reporting, writing, and editing skills and three to five years of experience reporting and/or editing
  • Knowledge and passion for all things Texas, especially news and politics (or a willingness and ability to learn quickly)
  • A proven ability to juggle multiple and varied story projects, including both features and short, timely news items
  • An eagerness to seek out and develop young writers from across a diverse state
  • Familiarity with WordPress or other content management systems and social media, particularly Twitter

  • Salary: $60K-$65K depending on experience
  • Medical, vision, and dental insurance.
  • 14 days of paid time off.
  • Up to three months paid family leave, plus
  • 401(k) company matching.
  • Support for professional training and attending industry conferences.

Company Description

The Texas Observer is a nonprofit news organization that strives to make Texas a more equitable place by exposing injustice through investigative journalism, narrative storytelling, and cultural coverage. Rather than chase “breaking news,” we dig beyond the headlines and contextualize news events. Our political commentary, essays, reviews, and criticism seek to create a new cultural canon and challenge existing mythologies. Since its founding in 1954, the Observer has focused on communities whose stories are too often ignored or poorly told. We hope not only to inform, but to empower our readers, as we work to hold public officials and corporations accountable. Our reporters recognize that oppressed people are experts on their own lives and trust their expertise. Our journalism is fact-based and rigorous, and we prize writing that entertains as it informs. We value history as a reporting tool that allows us to interrogate the origins of policies and to correct narratives that whitewash exploitation, dispossession, and genocide.
